How I Do My Hair!

Good Day, my dears!

On one of my previous posts, I was asked how I do my hair. Now, I know most vintage enthusiast gals do their hair in pincurls because it's the most authentic method for almost every era. Pincurls are a wonderful, timeless way to set your hair in a vintage style. However, I find they don't work as well for me, so I use foam rollers. For this set, I am using 1" foam rollers. [I also have 1¼" and 1/2" foam rollers. I usually use 1¼" but since I didn't sleep in this set, I went a size smaller.]

Thank you to Miss Maple, she helped my uploading photos issue!
Without further ado, here is my set!

I have dyed, straight, fine hair with some breakage at my roots.
I wash my hair daily [typically at night] because my hair gets oily.
My hair in this set is dry for the most part.

I divide my hair in 3 sections vertically.
I start at the front with the center row first, then work on the sides, rolling back.
I may have spritzed my hair after rolling all of them.
[4/5 water, 1/5 Tresemme Curl Hydration?]

I waited about 4-5 hrs to take them out.

I try and find waves, the top being the easiest to harness.

And that's about it!
My setting pattern is very basic.
Sometimes I roll the front forward, but I don't notice much difference.
Happy rolling!

Ivy

  1. Looks great! I have been considering trying foam rollers for a while now and it sounds like we have a similar hair type, so I will almost certainly give this a go. I have been struggling with pin curls for a long time and they really don't work well on my hair, so possibly foam rollers are the way to go.

  2. Great post! I've just mastered the pin curls since they weren't working out for me, took me forever! Foam rollers are next on my list. I tried them once but I think my hair was too short because they kept on falling out.

    1. If you have chin length hair, it may be trickier to set it. If they fall out easily, try rolling tighter or wear a scarf Rosie style to hold them up.

  3. Oooh yay I'm glad you got the photos working! I've always had bad luck with foam rollers bc I typically do wet sets, and my hair had gotten way too long for them ever to dry. But I just cut off a bunch... Think it's time to try again, seems like less of a pain than pincurls! Thanks love!

    1. Yes, it really depends on the hair type and length, you just have to try out different settings, and see which you like best.

  4. Oh they look so good!! I think you and I have the exact same hair type. Mine has to be washed daily too- or at least every other day and is super fine and straight. I tried foam rollers a few years ago but my hair turned out super frizzy. I wonder if I was rolling them too tight or maybe rolled too small pieces? Yours has a really nice wave on the side too! Great job!! x

    1. Thanks! I guess it depends on whether or not your hair is dry or wet, longer or shorter, fine or thick, etc. When I first set my hair a few years ago, it turned out really frizzy, and the rollers were too small. I nearly had a fro, and I thought it turned out good... at the time. I was using half inch sized rollers, so really I achieved the 85 year old woman look! I watched videos on Youtube, and just experimented. It really is just about whatever works for you. And at first, maybe it will look poodle-esque, but after all, practice makes perfect :)

  5. Oh, I've admired your hair in all your past posts, so it's nice to get a tutorial! You're lucky to have hair that holds curl so well! And it's so easy, surely you'll help out someone who wants to try a vintage do for the first time!

  6. Gosh I'm so envious of your glossy, frizz-free curls! I'm pretty fond of foam rollers, but I never set up the middle like this, I'll have to give it a shot!

  9. Your hair is such a gorgeous colour!!! I've never tried foam rollers because I like to curl my hair before bed and then sleep on it. Would these be comfortable to sleep in? I love how defined and perfect your curls are, I'm not the greatest at setting my pincurls and my curls often turn out wonky :P

    1. I usually set at night and sleep in them too. They aren't bad to sleep in, but some nights are better than others. If you don't leave big gaps in the back, the curlers won't feel pokey on your head. The best time to test foam rollers is in the afternoon when you have nothing planned. Or in the wintertime when you can put a hat on if they turn out wonky! :)

  11. Absolutely lovely! Pre-wig, I used to use foam rollers sometimes too, especially if I was looking for extra body at the ends of my strands.

  14. This is a great post and your curls turned out beautifully. I love reading everyday girls chat about their hair woes and triumphs. I haven't ventured into foam rollers myself, I tend to pin curl, hot roller or wet set on a day at home. xx Shauna
